The island of Kornat is the largest island of the group of islands that create the National Park Kornati, it gave its name to the archipelago.
Kornat, with several prominent peaks, lies SE of Dugi Otok and is separated from it by Prolaz Proversa, a narrow channel, which is obstructed by several islets and shoals and is suitable only for small craft.
Numerous islands and islets extend to the SW of Otok Kornat. These and the passages leading between them are of interest only to small craft and coasters with local knowledge. The Kornati islands are a paradise for sailors, divers and for those who like a quiet holiday in the deserted places. The clean sea full of fish attracts the seagulls come here often.
People lived on the island of Kornat during prehistoric times as evidenced by the stone axes found at the foot of the hill Padinka. It is interesting to see how people have divided the fields to grow them on this small area.
13M long (NW to SE), 1.4 NM large, this island offers the best anchor on its side NE at Uvala Statival, N coast there are moorings Uvala Mala Lupeska, and Strizna Tomasovac.
All other moorings are located in the SW and are protected by a chain of islands nearby that requires careful navigation to perform in daylight.
